FUMO RECOVERING AFTER BACK SURGERY

     PHILADELPHIA, February 19, 2008 – State Senator Vince Fumo (D-Philadelphia) underwent lumbar fusion surgery this morning on his back to correct a misalignment of vertebrae.

     The procedure was performed at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia by Dr. William Welch. Dr. Frederick Simeone was in attendance as consulting neurosurgeon. The surgery went smoothly, with no problems.

     As of this afternoon, Fumo, 64, was awake and in a recovery room. He will be somewhat restricted in his activities for several weeks.

     In October, Fumo underwent back surgery to correct a problem with arthritic bones that had been causing pain by compressing nerves.
